Movie Matinee: Arrival (Dir. Denis Villeneuve, 2016)

Based on the 1998 novella "Story of Your Life" by Ted Chiang, Arrival (2016) is an Academy Award-winning film that explores themes of language, time and determinism. Twelve alien spacecraft arrive on Earth, and a linguistics professor (Dr. Louise Banks, played by Amy Adams) must learn to communicate with them before tensions provoked by the unknown cause the humans to attack.

The film will be followed by a discussion facilitated by Danielle Martin, MA. Danielle is a clinical psychology predoctoral intern at Vantage Point Center for Psychotherapy in Sacramento. She also serves as a current board member for the Sacramento Psychoanalytic Society.
